The Desjardins Auditorium at the Polyvalente de Charlesbourg in Quebec City has undergone an exceptional transformation to modernize this 463-seat venue. The project, carried out in collaboration with the architectural firm BGLA, aimed to create a multifunctional auditorium, suitable for music and drama classes, as well as plays, conferences and shows.
Background and objectives
As the auditorium was built in 1970, a complete overhaul of the installations was carried out. As well as refreshing the finishes, replacing the seats and improving safety, acoustics were at the heart of the design process to enable the auditorium to be used in a variety of ways.
Atmosphäre’s cultural seats and expertise
Atmosphäre played a key role in this project, replacing the seats. Hussey Seating Company’s 463 Quattro seats, carefully selected for their comfort and accessibility, have significantly enhanced the experience for students, teachers and spectators alike.
Design for accessibility and safety
A central aspect of the project was to improve accessibility and safety. This included the replacement of all seats, the creation of permanent places at the front for people with reduced mobility, and interventions to widen the stairs and add handrails.
Technical challenges and innovative solutions
The design had to solve a number of technical challenges, including preserving the existing concrete block walls while integrating acoustic solutions. An angled ceiling was adopted to diffuse sound, and wall boxes were used as acoustic absorbers as well as major design elements.
The lighting has been redesigned to create a versatile atmosphere and facilitate maintenance. The use of winches for the ceiling luminaires has enabled greater adaptability to the different uses of the hall, while facilitating maintenance operations.
Final result
Today, the Auditorium Desjardins is a modern, distinguished space, offering an enhanced experience in terms of both design and functionality.
Students, teachers and spectators benefit from a multi-purpose hall, meeting the needs of the Polyvalente de Chalresbourg in terms of comfort and inclusion.
