Inspiring project: reinventing accessibility

Our team worked hand-in-hand with the school to create a play and learning space that celebrates diversity and encourages independence.
A unique learning environment
Des Érables School, located in the municipality of Deux-Montagnes, has the privilege of welcoming students aged 5 to 21 with profound intellectual disabilities or autism spectrum disorders.
We were delighted to work with such a dedicated educational team to transform their playground into an inclusive, engaging space suitable for all students.
The inclusive approach: creating for all
Our team followed the school’s unique vocation to create a playground that resonates with the authenticity of the educational experience.
Inspired by their approach, we designed a playground that not only allows play, but also encourages the development of skills, independence and connections between students.
An ecosystem of possibilities: project details
- A Playrite Matchwinner Velour sand dressed surface has been installed to facilitate accessibility, allowing every student to navigate safely, regardless of their level of mobility, functional limitations or the equipment they need to get around. This surface has an absorbent underlayer that complies with CSA Z614-20, providing adequate and safe protection in the event of a fall, while facilitating movement compared to natural surfaces such as sand and wood chips.
- Eight Bird’s Nest swings have been installed, each a space for exploration and fun. These swings, with their bumpers offering a secure tactile grip, create an engaging and inclusive experience.
- The seat ‘s vast dimensions not only allow a variety of positions, but also encourage interaction between students. Spacious enough to accommodate several users simultaneously, these swings become shared play areas, where every laugh and smile strengthens bonds.
Creativity and practicality: the magic of details
Every element, from the choice of materials to the design, has been thought out to allow students to immerse themselves in a stimulating and safe experience. The shallow seat and ergonomic design of each swing, combined with the sand dressed surface for an easy approach, simplify transfers from a wheelchair to the swing, for example.
