Are you interested in a telescopic stand and wondering where to start?
First, it’s important to understand that there are multiple options when it comes to a telescopic stand. However, they can be grouped into two main categories: Cultural or sports stands.
Instinctively, we tend to associate a sports grandstand with an aquatic center, a gymnasium, a palestra or an ice center. On the other hand, the variable-geometry grandstand of the cultural type will be associated with a Maison de la Culture, an auditorium or a theater. But what if your project is identified as a library, community center, council chamber, arts centre, agora or multi-purpose hall?
To determine which type of grandstand best suits your needs, there are a number of factors to consider.
Who is your multi-purpose hall’s target audience?
First of all, you need to consider the clientele for whom your telescopic stand is intended. A cultural grandstand is generally more appropriate for an elderly clientele or for young families, who might also appreciate the option of bench seats to easily group the family together. On the other hand, if your clientele consists mainly of teenagers, young adults or school-age children, the telescopic sports grandstand may be better suited to your reality.
Although comfort may be equivalent, when the stand is installed with seats with padded backrests (possible on both types of stand), it is usually advisable to opt for a cultural telescopic stand when comfort is the top priority.
Who will operate your telescopic stand?
Secondly, it’s important to understand that, depending on the size and complexity of the equipment, it is sometimes necessary to have dedicated personnel to open and close the telescopic stand. Although this feature is not necessarily distinctive between the two types of telescopic stands, it is generally more common for cultural stands.

In the same vein, sports grandstands are designed for quick and easy handling. With simple options and no removable parts, they can usually be easily manoeuvred by users themselves. The more detachable the telescopic stand, the longer it takes to set up.
How big is your space?
Thirdly, another important element is your usage space, which will define its configuration and size. It’s important to understand that the building code requires certain minimum clearances, and the number of rows in your grandstand will largely be determined by the height and width available. If it is to be integrated into a niche, the height of the niche will be our main parameter. Otherwise, if the stand is to join a balcony level, risers will be necessary, and it’s important to check their height. Ideally, if the stand stands alone in the room, our only limiting factor is the 2.1 m space required between the highest level of the stand and the underside of the ceiling.
