Innovative schoolyard design in the heart of Beauport
Atmosphäre collaborated with the Centre de Services Scolaires des Premières-Seigneuries to design the schoolyard atÉcole des Grands-Bâtisseurs, located in the Beauport borough.
Offering an exceptional view of one of the highest points in the region, this outdoor space has been transformed into a diversified and innovative playground. Designed by Nadège Tchuente of Nvira and the ABCP team, the layout meets the needs of different age groups. This large-scale project emphasizes sustainability and inclusiveness.
Six distinct zones for a stimulating schoolyard
The schoolyard is laid out around six distinct play areas, each designed to meet the play and educational needs of the pupils, while encouraging them to make the space their own.
1. Preschool play area
In the preschool zone, a double slide integrated into a mound was installed to provide an immersive play area, encouraging the development of motor skills in toddlers. This space was designed to allow children to explore in complete safety, while encouraging physical activity from an early age.
2. Rope course for 5-12 year-olds
The second zone is aimed at pupils aged 5 to 12, with a Corocord rope course and an innovative structure from Kompan‘s GREENLINE collection, made from eco-friendly materials. This playful course encourages coordination and agility, while offering an environmentally-friendly play experience. The theme of this structure is inspired by the elements of sea and land, bringing an educational dimension to the playground.
3. Robinia wooden playground
In keeping with the aim of creating a sustainable play area, the third zone features a course made from 100% Robinia wood, a natural material that respects environmental standards while offering a unique play experience. The course encourages children’s imagination while offering age-appropriate challenges.
4. Relaxation area with swings
This space has been designed to provide an opportunity for relaxation. Eight swing seats allow students to enjoy the panoramic view while relaxing. The integration of these elements into the schoolyard reinforces the idea that play and relaxation can coexist in an educational environment.
5. 12-foot-high rope dome
One of the playground’s most impressive features is a 12-foot-high rope dome. This structure invites children to climb, challenge each other and test their risk management skills. At the top, the dome becomes a hammock where students can rest, chat and socialize.
6. Large mound and curved slide
The large mound, a focal point of this schoolyard, offers several climbing options: half-spheres to climb, two membrane and rope courses, and a static rope. Once at the top, a large, curved slide provides a fun way down, adding a touch of excitement to the playground.
Technical challenges and solutions: an inclusive school playground
The main challenge of this project was to integrate play structures to meet children’s needs, while maximizing the use of space and respecting architectural and environmental constraints.
Atmosphäre worked closely with Marie-Ève Garon, landscape architect with the firm Stantec, to emphasize playful objectives that promote inclusiveness and sustainability.
Eco-friendly materials and sustainability in the school environment
In an eco-responsible approach, all the structures in this schoolyard were selected for their durability. The use of Kompan‘s GREENLINE collection, made from recycled materials, underlines Atmosphäre’s commitment to creating environmentally-friendly play areas in the school environment.
Results: a dynamic, inspiring schoolyard
Thanks to this project, the École des Grands-Bâtisseurs now has an outdoor space that is both educational and fun, meeting the needs of students of all ages. This play area not only promotes physical development, but also social interaction and the well-being of children in a safe and inspiring environment.
